Newcastle Rugby Foundation is proud to announce John as the third and final participant in its “Faces of the Foundation” campaign, celebrating the remarkable people whose stories showcase the power of rugby and community.
At 73 years old, retired neurologist John is a valued member of the Foundation’s walking rugby programme and a regular player for Blaydon Walking Rugby Club. His energy, resilience and positivity make him a hugely respected figure both on and off the pitch.
Following the loss of his wife a few years ago, John was searching for connection, routine and community. Joining walking rugby gave him exactly that — helping him build friendships, stay active and rediscover the joy of being part of a team.
What started as trying something new quickly became a huge part of John’s life. Through weekly sessions, camaraderie and shared experiences, walking rugby has helped fill a difficult gap and created lasting friendships that continue to support him every day.
John’s story is a powerful reminder that rugby is for everyone, regardless of age or experience, and highlights the importance of community sport in tackling loneliness and improving wellbeing.
Speaking about his experience, John said:
“Walking rugby has given me friendship, purpose and something to look forward to every week. The people involved have been fantastic and it’s become a really important part of my life.”
Newcastle Rugby Foundation is incredibly proud to celebrate John as a Face of the Foundation — not only for his commitment to the programme, but for the inspiration he provides to others through his courage, kindness and positivity.
The Foundation’s walking rugby sessions continue to provide opportunities for older adults across the North East to stay active, improve wellbeing and feel part of a supportive community through rugby.
