During October half-term, Newcastle Rugby Foundation proudly joined forces with four other leading sporting charities from across the region to deliver an unforgettable two-day Region of Sport camp, held at Kingston Park Stadium on Thursday 30th and Friday 31st November.

This exciting initiative forms part of North East Mayor Kim McGuinness’ vision for the North East to become the first #RegionOfSport, a region where every young person has access to the power and positivity of sport.

Across the week, we worked together with the Foundation of Light, Newcastle United Foundation, Newcastle Eagles Foundation and Durham Cricket Foundation to provide hundreds of children from local communities with experiences they’ll never forget. From fun-filled activity camps to meeting first team players, from playing at professional venues to enjoying nutritious lunches and free childcare for families — it was a celebration of everything sport can offer.

For the young people involved, the two-day rugby camp delivered by Newcastle Rugby Foundation was packed with energy, laughter and learning. It gave children the opportunity to get active, build confidence, and develop key life skills — all while experiencing the unique sense of teamwork and belonging that rugby brings.

We know the incredible impact that sport can have — not only in keeping children physically active, but in supporting mental health, wellbeing, and self-belief. The Region of Sport initiative is helping to unlock these benefits for even more young people across the North East, showing just how powerful sport can be when organisations come together with a shared purpose.

This collaborative project has been made possible thanks to the support of Spirit of 2012, whose funding continues to help foundations like ours deliver opportunities that change lives.

From everyone at Newcastle Rugby Foundation, a huge thank you to our partners, coaches, volunteers, and of course, the amazing children who took part.

This is just the beginning for Region of Sport — and we can’t wait to see what’s next.
