Crowds gathered in celebration yesterday on Wednesday June 4 as the Women’s Rugby World Cup Trophy Tour rolled into Hylton Castle, marking a standout moment in the region’s build-up to the tournament. Attended by Newcastle Rugby Foundation, the event showcased the iconic trophy and offered local children a chance to try rugby through a free taster session, igniting excitement across the community.
As the official Community Development Programme Partners for the tournament, this event was a major milestone in our journey and a shining example of what rugby can do to unite, inspire and energise communities.
Set against the historic backdrop of Hylton Castle, the iconic Rugby World Cup trophy drew in excited crowds from across Sunderland and beyond. The atmosphere was buzzing as families, school groups, and local residents got a chance to get up close with the silverware that will be at the centre of the world stage later this year.
The day wasn’t just about the photo opportunities – it was about participation and pride. The Foundation ran a free rugby taster session on-site, giving children and young people a chance to try the sport, many for the very first time.
This event was one of a series of free community activities we’re delivering across the region in the run-up to the tournament. From school visits to rugby festivals, our mission is to use this once-in-a-generation moment to grow the game, build confidence and create lasting memories for young people.
Being named as the official Community Development Programme Partners for the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 is a huge accolade for Newcastle Rugby Foundation. It recognises our longstanding work in using rugby as a tool for good, and our commitment to making the game accessible, inclusive, and empowering for all.
We’re proud to play our part in the build-up to the Women’s Rugby World Cup and even prouder of the impact it’s already having on young people right here in the North East.
