A journey that began with nerves and uncertainty has ended in triumph and celebration for young rugby player William Oakley, who recently completed his ambitious 10 challenge campaign and raised an incredible £4,000 for the Newcastle Rugby Foundation and Peterlee and Horden Rugby Club.

Four years ago, William attended his first Newcastle Rugby Foundation camp while battling anxiety and the challenges of autism and ADHD. With the support of his mum, Sydnie, and the camp coaches, he gradually found the confidence to thrive both on and off the pitch.

In 2025, determined to give back, William set out to complete 10 challenges in 10 months. These ranged from a 24 hour sponsored silence to muddy obstacle courses and community fundraising events. His journey inspired friends, family, and the wider rugby community, exceeding his original fundraising goal and making a real difference to the causes closest to his heart.

To thank him for his dedication, the Newcastle Falcons honoured William on the pitch after their final home game of the season. He received a signed shirt and a pair of boots from his favourite player, Brett Connon.

“It was an unreal moment!” said William. “I could not believe I got to meet the players and getting Brett’s boots was just amazing. I did all these challenges because rugby makes me feel like I belong, and I wanted to help other kids feel the same.”

Charlie Roberts, Income Generation Manager at Newcastle Rugby Foundation, praised William’s extraordinary efforts: “William’s determination and heart have been truly inspiring. He has shown what is possible when young people are given the chance to shine. The money he has raised will go directly toward supporting our work. We are so grateful and proud of everything he has done.”

William’s story is a shining example of how one person’s passion can spark real change. Your support can help continue this vital work. Visit the Newcastle Rugby Foundation’s website to donate or sign up to Give as You Live to support them every time you shop online.
